Cristina J. Fowler
Cristina passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2017. Although she was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, friend and active in many community organizations, she was especially known because of her gentle and loving disposition. Everyone that met Cristina received her unlimited love.
She was born in Cardenas, Cuba on May 3, 1949. At the young age of 12, while her father was a political prisoner in Castro’s Cuba, she fled Cuba and took her three little sisters to an orphanage in Indiana where she cared for them just as if she was their mother.
She was a founder of the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation, started 30 years ago, and the first Chairwoman of the Azucar Ball, an event which has generated funds for 800 scholarships to children of Latin American heritage who have demonstrated a willingness to work hard.
She is survived by two wonderful children, George J. Fowler, IV, his wife, Jennifer Walker Fowler, her daughter Cristi Fowler Chauvin and her husband Christian Chauvin. Cristina had five magnificent grandsons whom she loved fiercely, Christian, Georgie, Jack, Julian, and Nick. All of them inherited her special traits in one way or the other.
She leaves behind a multitude of very good friends, many of whom for the past three painful years took precious care of her and her family.
She was married for 45 wonderful years to George J. Fowler, III.
Cristina was a devoted Christian loving the Father, Son, Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary. Today she is with them.
Her mass service will be held at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 6367 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA at 12:00 Noon on Friday, September 22, 2017. There will be visitation from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 Noon prior to mass.
