Willie Marvin McCardle

The family of Willie Marvin McCardle announce his passing at the age of 94. Although he grew up on a farm in Mississippi, he left the land and found his passion working on the water. First in Biloxi then on the Mississippi River. He started as a tankerman with National Marine Service and worked his way up to Captain of the vessel. He tried his hand in the home offices but found the four walls surrounding him confining. He returned to the river and retired as Captain after serving some 30 years. He is survived by his loving wife, Leatrice Backstrom McCardle. They married in 1948 and survived the next 74 together through lifes’ hills and valleys. Willie was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Marvin McCardle and Mattie Clark McCardle. He is survived by his children; Susan Richard (Paul), Marvin McCardle (Stephanie), Richard McCardle (Ruby, deceased), Douglas McCardle, and his sister Pat Pierce. Willie is survived by seven grandchildren, one step grandchild; twelve great grandchildren and one step great grandchild. Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life, on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124.
