Walter W. Staufer
Walter William Staufer, age 94, of Metairie, Louisiana, passed away on October 17, 2017. Walter was born on October 2, 1923 in Los Fresnos, Texas to the late Joseph Staufer and Ida Muellenberg Staufer. As a child, he moved with his family to his parents’ birthplace of South Dakota where he graduated from high school in 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and served with honor in both World War II and the Korean War. After his discharge from the Navy, Walter began a career with Boeing as an electrical engineer. In 1963 he moved with his wife and their four children to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he continued his career with Boeing and was involved with the development of NASA’s Saturn V rocket boosters for the U.S. space program. Walter was an avid hunter and enthusiastic outdoors sportsman. The family spent many happy weekends and summer vacations camping, fishing, swimming, and water skiing. His family will fondly remember his love for the outdoors and his service to his country both in wartime and peace as an enduring legacy.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ida Muellenberg Staufer; brother Kenneth Staufer; and sisters June Bourn, Loretta Heinz, Joyce Gullett, and Doris Sohm. He is survived by his wife Mildred Staufer; children Patricia Staufer, Lamont Staufer, Lorry Staufer, and Angela Smith; former spouse and mother of his children, Donna Kruse; grandchildren Luke Smith and Stephen Smith; brother Lyle Staufer; and sister Idella Lout.
A private, family memorial will be held in Destin, Florida. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to dementia research or the charity of one’s choice.
