Sonja M Austin

April 23, 1952 ~ January 1, 2018 (age 65) 65 Years Old

Sonja Morales Austin

In the early morning of January 1, 2018, God answered our beloved Sonja’s prayerful plea and let her pass away peacefully in her home in the presence of her loving family. Her suffering with the many cancers which scourged her body was ended.

Daughter of Eleanora Marcade and the late Albert Morales.  She was preceded in death by her sister Glenda Morales and infant granddaughter Ashley Coman. She is survived by her loving husband Ira Conrad Austin, Jr, and children Shannan Austin Coman (George Jr), Ira C. Austin,III (Shannon), and Ellen R. Austin. In addition, she was the “Grammé” of George A. Coman, III, Kaitlyn E. Coman, Ira C. Austin, IV, Aiden S. Austin, Ana G. Austin, & Emma R. Austin.  Also survived by in-laws Edward and Hilda Austin, Georgiana and David Lacour, and Debra Austin (the late Fred);  along with many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Sonja was born April 23, 1952 in New Orleans and was a longstanding resident of Mid City and moved to Metairie after Katrina. As a longstanding resident of Mid City there wasn’t much she did that didn’t fall within the shadows of the great bronze dome of Our Lady of the Rosary Church. She was baptized, confessed, and married all there. Later, she was a member of the Lady’s Sodality, a Eucharistic minister, and  wedding coordinator at Holy Rosary. In addition, she was a fixture of DeBlanc Drug Store, sitting at her usual end of the counter waiting on customers, while giving grief to others (customers and fellow employees). On Saturdays, she would venture into Lakeview in order to talk the ears off her friends at the Belle Vista Salon.
Sonja was a excellent mother and grandmother. She attended as many of her children and grandchildren’s events as possible. She never missed a game, a performance, or a school function.  At these functions she enjoyed being with all of her friends and family.
She was happy if you were happy, she was sad if you were sad, she was angry if you were angry, she was amazingly different and great.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a celebration for Sonja on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 from 11am-1pm at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd, New Orleans, LA 70124 followed by a funeral mass at 1pm. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Sonja’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or a charity of your choice.
