Robert "Bobby" August Hemel peacefully said goodbye to the world on November 9, 2023, at the age of 83. A beloved presence from New Orleans and Thibodaux, LA, Bobby's departure left an enduring mark on the hearts of those who held him dear. Surrounded by the love of his family, he gracefully entered eternity in North Richland Hills, TX.
Born on June 8, 1940, in New Orleans, Bobby was the son of John Armand Hemel and Ida Francis Thonn. His life unfolded as a beautiful narrative, encompassing the roles of a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather, a great-grandfather, a caring brother, an affectionate uncle, and a steadfast colleague and friend.
Bobby's spirit echoed the vibrant rhythm of Louisiana. A graduate of Holy Cross High School and a devoted supporter of LSU and the Saints, his passion for his home city and state was unmistakable. For 47 years, he dedicated his professional life to McDermott, Inc., a testament not only to his work ethic but also to his unwavering loyalty and commitment. The love he held for New Orleans and Louisiana was evident in the way he spoke of his roots, carrying with him the very essence and soul of the culture he held dear.
In his everyday encounters, Bobby's warmth and charm defined him. Everyone he met became a cherished friend, addressed with endearing nicknames such as honey, darlin’, chief, or padna’. If you wanted to capture his attention, all you had to do was bring up his favorite topic: sports. His eyes would light up with excitement as he engaged in lively discussions about the latest games, breaking down every play and critiquing every coaching decision.
At the center of Bobby's universe were his beloved wife of 58 years, Linda, and his cherished “girls”— his daughters, Lauralyn and Tricia. Also, his granddaughters, Ashton and Megan, and great-granddaughter, Pia Rose.
Predeceased by his parents and brothers John Louis Hemel and Ronald Jacob Hemel, Bobby is survived by his loving wife, Linda Accardo Hemel, his daughters Lauralyn (David) Sunseri and Tricia (Vince Mantero) Hemel. His granddaughters, Megan (Cade) Strickland and Ashton (James Richardson) Sunseri, along with his great-granddaughter, Pia Rose Strickland, will forever carry his legacy forward.
A private memorial service for the immediate family is scheduled for November 22, 2023, in Fort Worth, TX, where Bobby will be honored.
