Mrs. Earl L. Allen, nee Nettie Jane Lacombe, of Metairie, Louisiana, on November 1, 2017
Nettie Jane Lacombe Allen was born to Narcisse Lacombe and Rowena Roy Gauthier Lacombe of Cottonport, Louisiana, on November 18, 1932, the youngest of five siblings. Reared by these pious and hardworking parents in the French Catholic culture of rural Louisiana, Nettie Lacombe received a strict moral and religious training which formed the bedrock foundation for her future life as a devoted wife and mother. Always apt for learning, she excelled in her studies at the Cottonport public schools, and after graduating from Cottonport High School in 1950, easily found work as an expert typist and administrative assistant in the Louisiana Department of Commerce and Industry in Baton Rouge. Her mastery of English, her second language, was exemplary, and in later years, as a secretary in various public agencies, she not infrequently had occasion to correct the grammar of highly degreed, albeit less literate, supervisors.
In Baton Rouge the future Mrs. Allen met Earl Lafayette Allen of New Orleans, who had removed to Baton Rouge in order to work at WBRZ television. Earl and Nettie were united in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony at St. Joseph Church (later Cathedral) in Baton Rouge, on October 20, 1956. After living for six months in Lafayette, where Mr. Allen worked for KLFY television, they moved back to New Orleans and resided in the New Orleans area for the remainder of their married life.
The union of Earl Allen and Nettie Lacombe produced four sons and two daughters, all of whom their parents strove to rear in the practice of their faith, traditional family and community loyalties, and dedication to honest work. Mrs. Allen in particular was steadfastly devoted to the education of her children, and she and Mr. Allen made many sacrifices to obtain for them the best education available to them, a great deal of which was conducted in the schools of the Archdiocese of New Orleans and those of various religious orders.
Though a full-time housewife and mother for a great deal of her married life, Mrs. Allen returned to work outside the home as her children grew older, and she distinguished herself as a tireless and expert clerical assistant and later as a manager at the Jefferson Parish Council on Aging, the New Orleans Area Agency on Aging, and the Southeast Louisiana Council of the Girl Scouts of America.
Mrs. Allen was a dedicated parishioner of St. Louis, King of France Church in Metairie, from the time of the Allens' settling in that parish in 1964 until her decease.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Earl (+2000), and by her siblings: Blumes Gauthier, Richard Lacombe, Allen Lacombe, and Raymond Lacombe.
She is survived by six children, twelve grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren:

Mr. Gene P. Allen of Metairie, married to the former Miss Olivia Bolter; his son Matthew (Crystal, one child Cael).
Mr. Donald J. Allen of Metairie, married to the former Miss Robin Trahan, with their children Alexis and William
Mrs. Harriett “Mamie” A. Henry of Mandeville, married to Mr. Craig Henry, with their children Victoria and Craig, Jr.
Mr. John D. Allen of Mandeville, married to the former Miss Ann Vuncannon, with their children Samuel and Elise.
Mrs. Rebecca A. Powers of Gulfport, married to Mr. Benjamin Powers, with their children Mary Alexandra and Maximilian.
Visitation will take place at St. Catherine of Siena, 105 Bonnabel Blvd., in Metairie, on Thursday, November 9, from ten thirty until twelve noon, followed by the funeral Mass at noon, celebrated by the Reverend Matthew Clark, O.S.B. Interment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery.
The family asks that donations be made to The Servants of Mary in lieu of flowers.
