Mary Marguerite Gilmore

September 19, 1934 ~ February 6, 2021 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Tribute

Mary Marguerite Gilmore, born on September 19, 1934 at Charity Hospital in New Orleans to Hugh F. Gilmore and Josepha Manade, was 86 years old when she died on February 6, 2021 in Covington, Louisiana where she lived for the last 15 years.

She grew up in the French Quarter and attended St. Louis Cathedral School before receiving a scholarship to St. Scholastica Academy where she graduated valedictorian. She devoted her life to religious service while still a young woman, before leaving, to continue her education in the city. She had the distinction of being the first female mosquito control inspector in the U.S. She was a life-long teacher. In St. Bernard and Orleans parishes, she taught science and English. Before retiring, her classes were freshman English at Ben Franklin High School.

In retirement, she volunteered as a CASA advocate for children, lunched with high school friends, wrote poetry, became an adept potter, completed coursework for a Masters of Fine Arts in painting, and beat cancers. Also, she enjoyed avid reading, New York Times crossword puzzles, birds outside her window, kitchen gadgets, Bob Ross, opera, teas, fresh bread, British TV, mazes, not taking herself or life too seriously, and the overwhelming joy of being a grandmother.

As the last in her generation, she is reunited with her parents, siblings, aunts, and uncles and is survived by her son, George F. Gilmore, daughter-in-law Silvia San Martin, and grandchildren Nathan C. Gilmore, Paul M. Gilmore, and Sofia K. Gilmore. Sassy, her cat, misses her very much too. A graveside ceremony will occur on Friday, February 19, 2021 at 12:00 PM at Greenwood Cemetery as facilitated by Greenwood Funeral Home. Please RSVP 858.371.1100.
