Tribute

Reverend Joseph C. Tranchina Jr. passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at the age of 79.
Fr. Joe, as he was known to his parishioners and friends, was ordained to the priesthood on May 18, 1968. His first assignment was Incarnate Word parish in the Carrollton area of New Orleans. He also served at Mater Delarosa, St. Francis of Assisi, Visitation of our Lady, and Our Lady of Lourdes where he was the Chaplain for Baptist Hospital. He became pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea, and finally Visitation of our Lady in Marrero. He suffered a devastating stroke on Christmas Day in 1985 that sent him into retirement.
To say Fr. Joe loved Mardi Gras is an understatement. He was a member of several Mardi Gras organizations including Krewe of Carrollton, Krewe of Freret, Knights of Babylon, and the Krewe of Bacchus. Riding in parades was one of Fr. Joe’s greatest joys and he passed this love of Carnival on to his family.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph C. Tranchina, Sr., mother, Gaynell Sarrazin Tranchina, and grandparents Joseph and Ruth Rapp Tranchina, and Louis and Rola Sarrazin.
He is survived by sisters and brothers-in-law Jonell and Harold Hirsch, Jr. of Houma, LA, Carolyn and Edward Dingeman, III of Picayune, MS, nephew Jeffrey (Wendy) Hirsch, and children Dalton and Abbey of Gray, LA, niece Christin (Ryan) LeBoeuf, and children Sophie, Brooks and Laurel Grace of Diamondhead, MS, and step-nephew Edward (Kristen) Dingeman IV, and children Edward V, and Elizabeth of Slidell, LA. He is also survived by dear cousins David Horaist Jr. and Ruth Horaist Gianelloni and their families.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 631 State Street, New Orleans, on Tuesday, February 9, 2021, starting at 10:00 AM, followed by a Mass at 11:00 AM. A private burial will take place at a later date in St. Vincent De Paul Cemetery #1. In lieu of flowers donations to the American Heart Association are preferred: 2159 East Pass Road, Suite A, Gulfport, MS 39507.
