Tribute

Jean Ann Carbon Riecke, beloved mother, wife, grandmother and great grandmother, died surrounded by family at home in Marietta, Georgia on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at the age of 86 after a six-year battle with dementia. A native of New Orleans, where she lived for 30 years, she is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Henry Sebastian Riecke III, also a native of New Orleans, who passed away June 2, 2018, and her parents John Warren Carbon and Grace Shay Carbon of New Orleans.

She is survived by her sons Thomas Shay (Micki) Riecke of Cape Coral, Florida and Timothy Jung (Phyllis) Riecke of Whitsett, North Carolina; her daughter Terrie Riecke (Peter) O’Hanlon of Marietta, Georgia; seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter: Ryan, Megan and Shannon O’Hanlon; Christina Riecke; Kaitlyn Kolesaire; Ashleigh Nicole and Paul A. Davis; and Alexis Garner. She also is survived by her sister-in-law Jean Riecke (Joseph) Deckert of New Orleans; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert and Joan Riecke of Metairie, Louisiana; and brother-in-law Charles (Mona) Riecke of Texas.

Jean loved serving her family and the many patients she tended to and babies she helped bring into the world during her 30-year career as a Registered Nurse. In 1956 she graduated from the Touro Infirmary School of Nursing in New Orleans and launched her career as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse and Labor and Delivery nurse at Touro Infirmary and Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans; Edwards Hospital in Naperville, Illinois; and Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. She also served as an otorhinolaryngology (ENT) and facial plastic surgery nurse in a physician practice and at Brandon Regional Hospital in Brandon, Florida.

Jean was a consummate planner and doer. Her supportive coaching imbued many new moms with the wisdom to confidently care for their newborns. She was a giving and spirited grandmother, always willing to plan and manage trips to Disney World and Florida beaches for her grandchildren. She was undaunted by life’s challenges and taught her children strength of will and determination.

A devout Catholic, Jean and her husband Henry (Fritz) were active members of several parishes in New Orleans, Louisiana; Winter Haven, Florida; East Brunswick, New Jersey; Brandon, Florida; Naperville, Illinois; and Roswell, Georgia as they relocated to accept Fritz’s career promotions.
