Janice Day Nungesser

Janice Day Nungesser peacefully passed away surrounded by her family on Saturday, April 16, 2022, at the age of 79, due to complications after surgery for pancreatic cancer. Beloved wife of 39 years to Gary George Nungesser who passed away in 2015. Beloved Mother of Stephen J. Fernandez (Julie), Stanton J. Fernandez (Sonia) and Jai-Anne Nungesser Miller (Patrick). Grandmother to Reed Fernandez (Mother, Melissa C Fernandez), Braden Fernandez, Collin Fernandez, Mallory Miller and George Miller. Sister-in-law and friend of Linda M. Nungesser.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary G. Nungesser, her brother, Ronnie Day; and her parents, Helen Heider Day and Robert Day, Sr. She leaves behind her two brothers Robert Day Jr. and Terry Day and her three beloved children and five grandchildren.
Mrs. Nungesser was a native of Algiers most of her life and a resident of Abita Springs for the past 4 years. She was a graduate of Behrman High School and up until her illness reunited with her class each month. She was also a member of the Northlake Newcomers Club, St John of the Cross Christian Social Group, and a devoted parishioner to St Jane de Chantal Catholic Church. Janice was retired after owning Aurora Seafood and Steak House in Algiers with her husband before their retirement in 2004. She later worked part-time for Dillards Department Store where she met several special friends, one of which remained by her side daily until the very end. She was supported by her loving friends, some of over 60 years, and her supportive family and wonderful neighbors.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd., New Orleans, on Friday, May 13th starting at 9am, followed by a Memorial Service in the Chapel at 11am. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park, 1225 Whitney Ave, Gretna, LA. Memorial Donations may be made to The Ronald McDonald House Charities or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
