Dr. Howard Hugo Russell, Jr. (Russ) died peacefully on August 25, 2021 at the age of 82. He is survived by his six children: Hugh (Christina) Russell, Molly Creel, Charlotte (Jim) Bradford, Ben Russell, Katie (Brand) Newland, and Rachel (Matthew) Krenz. And his eleven grandchildren: Hagan and Grace Russell; Alec (Macy) and Matthew Creel; Gabi and James Bradford; Bryce, Alexis, Taylor and Hunter Russell; and Annie Krenz. We all know he is dancing his way into heaven, greeted by Anne, Mimi, and Pop-Pop.
Dr. Russell attended Isidore Newman, Sewanee, and Tulane University (MD, 1963). A fixture in the New Orleans medical community for over fifty years, he managed patient care, made house calls for elderly patients, provided home health services and guided hospice care. In addition, Dr. Russell precepted residents of Tulane University School of Medicine. He served as medical director of two nursing homes and as the director of hemodialysis and allergies for the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.
Russ loved writing poetry, spending time in Pass Christian, MS, and dining at local New Orleans restaurants. Most of all, he loved people. He loved taking care of and comforting those in need. He lived his faith daily and dedicated his entire life to serving others. Even in his final days, he could be found comforting other residents at the nursing home.
Due to Hurricane Ida, a private memorial service and burial for immediate family took place on September 15th at Greenwood Funeral Home and Greenwood Cemetery.
