Grace Marie Witsell

Grace Marie Witsell, a retired Social Security employee, died January 11, 2019 at the age of 97. The fifth of six children of the late Robert and Frances Schmidt Witsell, she was a 1939 graduate of McMain High School, and a proud Phi Beta Kappa graduate from Newcomb College of Tulane University in 1943. Grace was a lifelong devout Catholic, and was very active in St. Anthony of Padua and St. Dominic parishes before Hurricane Katrina. After returning to Metairie in 2011, she resided at the Atrium before moving to the Chateau de Notre Dame in New Orleans in 2016. She loved traveling the world and encouraged her family members to learn by traveling. Grace is survived by her brother, Fred Witsell (Lou) of Piedmont, Alabama, 12 nieces and nephews, as well as 32 great-nieces and nephews, and a very special adopted niece and caregiver Judy Zeringue. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Benilde Church, 1901 Division Street, Metairie, LA 70001 on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 12 noon. Visitation will be from 10 am until funeral time. Interment at Cypress Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Catholic parish or charity of your choice.
