Tribute

Gilbert Joseph Sevier Jr., known as “Joe” to many of his friends and “Pop” to the younger generation, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on April 15, 2022. He was 91. He was born in Lockhart, Texas, but soon moved to Midland, Texas where he lived until college. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 wonderful years, Marion Sue Sevier, his parents Gilbert J. Sevier Sr. and Romie Stiles Sevier, an older brother, Ben Sevier, and a son, Gilbert J. Sevier III. He is survived by a sister, Marion Jobe, two children, Suzanne Sevier Broadwell (Jimmy), William Charter Sevier (Carol), six grandchildren, Ashley Yaste, James Broadwell Jr., Melissa Rosenberry, Kenneth Broadwell, William Charter Sevier Jr., Abigail Sevier Karam, and 7 great-grandchildren.

He started his career in the oil and gas industry first with his father and then on his own after his years at the University of Texas where he was a member of the SAE fraternity. He began with Pure Oil Company, moving to Texas, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado, then opened Birthright Oil and Gas after moving to New Orleans where he enjoyed several years working in the oil and gas insurance field.

Joe was co-founder of LIOGA, Director of the IPAA, and President and Director of PLANO. He served as President of the New Orleans Petroleum Club and was a Commissioner of the New Orleans Park and Parkway Commission. He also served as a board member of Goodwill Industries and the Crescent Bank and Trust.

He enjoyed life to the fullest, spending time with his family and numerous lifelong friends. He loved to fish and hunt, and especially cherished his time in the marsh with his children and grandchildren. His lunches at Galatoire’s were the highlight of his week for over 50 years, enjoying his friends at “Table 21” and sharing great times with the employees.

His family would like to thank his long-time caregivers, Devlin Terry and Harrli King for the kindness, affection and many years of loving care. Also, thank you to Kim Lacombe, his Notre Dame hospice nurse who brought him both comfort and laughter in his final years.
