Dorothy Jane MacCandless McCloskey (1935 - 2017)
Dorothy Jane MacCandless McCloskey, lifelong native of New Orleans, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 9, 2017. Daughter of the late John William MacCandless and Jane Hickey MacCandless. Sister to Gray and Fr. William MacCandless. Beloved mother to 8 children: Carlen McCloskey Bourgeois (spouse Philip), Vaune McCloskey Hegmann (spouse Steven), Laure McCloskey Sadauskas (spouse Michelle), Mary McCloskey Sloan, John McCloskey (spouse Lynn), Charles McCloskey, Jr., Emily McCloskey Lopez and Michael McCloskey. Precious grandmother to 9 grandchildren: Moira Bourgeois, Erin Bourgeois, Sophia Hegmann, David Flotte, Patricia Sloan, Kelly Sloan, John McCloskey, Jr., Margaret McCloskey, Luis Lopez, Jr. and Liam Lopez; and great grandmother to Noah Flotte, Mariah Flotte. She was known by friends, family and especially her grandchildren as “Muffin.” A lifelong educator, she began teaching at St. Dominic’s Elementary School and continued her teaching career at Archbishop Chapelle High School. In all, she taught for over 40 years. A lifelong student as well, she earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Southwestern Louisiana Institute, Master’s Degree from Loyola University, and pursued her Doctorate at University of New Orleans. In addition, she studied at the University of Cincinnati, and Georgetown University.
A very active member in the Catholic Church, she organized and participated in numerous mission trips (locally and internationally), as well as multiple prayer groups. She was also a fervent fan of the New Orleans Saints, Louisiana State University and Jerry Garcia. Her caring nature, selflessness, loyalty, generosity, and endless smiles will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers donations to Pax Christi New Orleans preferred.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St Dominic Catholic Church, 775 Harrison Ave., New Orleans, LA. on Friday, 7/14/2017 at 12:00 PM.
