Donald Jon Zimmer

Donald Jon Zimmer died peacefully on August 27th, 2021 in the town of Leesburg, Virginia at the age of 86 where he lived with his family. Don, as he was known by friends, lived most of his life in New Orleans, Louisiana where he was born in 1935. Don attended Jesuit High School and received his degree in Architecture from Tulane University. He worked as a commercial architect for over 40 years primarily in the French Quarter and had a deep passion for the historic richness of the area. He worked on many projects for building and restoring an extensive list of restaurants and hotels, including the Vieux Carre’ restoration and the Youth Study Center. He was an affiliate with the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Don participated in the Krewe of Bacchus for over 30 years and started as an original krewe member. He loved cooking and spending time with family. He was passionate about watching football and was a devoted “Who Dat” Saints fan. In his younger years he avidly enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was very active with Jesuit wrestling and St. Rita Elementary School events like the spaghetti dinner and Halloween Fair. He partnered annually with A Child’s Wish of Louisiana. Don will be greatly missed by his beloved family. He is survived by former spouse and best friend Joyce Courtade Zimmer; children Eric Zimmer and his wife Laurie, Aaron Zimmer and his wife Esme, Tina Sciambra and her husband Larry, Donna Carroll and her husband Stewart, John Zimmer and his wife Angie; sister Sandra Ridolfo and her husband Joseph; grandchildren Brian, Courtney, Alejandra, Arianna, Aaron Joseph, Lawrence, William, Patrick, Cali, Alex, Nathan, and Natalie; Nieces Mary, Jennifer, Teresa; great-grandchild Mason.  Donald was predeceased by his parents, John Henry and Vivian Juanita Zimmer.  A Memorial Service will be held at St. John the Apostle Church, 101 Oakcrest Manor Dr NE, Leesburg, VA, on Thursday September 30, 2021 at 6:00 PM. A Visitation will also be held at St. Rita Catholic Church, 2729 Lowerline St., New Orleans, LA 70125, on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 9:00 AM. The Funeral Mass will follow directly after the visitation at St. Rita Catholic Church.
