Alvin Magner

Alvin Gerard “Sonny” Magner, Jr., passed away at the age of 86 on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 while evacuated from Hurricane Ida in Orange Beach, Alabama. He was surrounded by his loving and devoted family. Sonny is survived by his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Joan Ferran Magner, whom he adored, as well as his two daughters, Melinda Magner Andrews (Patrick) and Samantha Magner Burkhardt (Henry Jeffrey). Alvin will be greatly missed by his five grandchildren, Travis Magner Andrews, Tyler Magner Andrews, Houstoun Gerard Waring, Hayley Cecilia Waring and Johnston Jeffrey Burkhardt. He is also survived by his sister, Beverly Magner Bourgeois, and many nieces and nephews. Alvin was devastated by the untimely death of his daughter, Amanda Magner Waring. He was predeceased by his parents, Nora Johnston Magner and Alvin Gerard Magner, Sr., his in-laws, Pearl Semel Ferran and John Patrick Ferran, and his brothers, John and Donald Magner. Sonny was born in New Orleans and attended Alcee Fortier High School and Southeastern Louisiana University. A disabled veteran, he received an Honorable Discharge, proudly serving in the Hurricane Hunters Division of the United States Navy and was stationed in Hawaii during the Korean War. He was a devout Catholic and had a special spiritual relationship with St. Gerard Majella. Sonny had many hobbies: sailing, golf, tennis, skiing and flying. Sonny had a special place in his heart for the great grand dog, Rex. The Funeral Mass and inurnment will be private. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
