Laura Hernandez Rivera

October 24, 1936 ~ February 9, 2018 (age 81) 81 Years Old
Laura Hernandez Rivera was called to her heavenly home on Friday, February 9, 2018, in Marrero, Louisiana. She was born on October 24, 1936, in Hatillo, Puerto Rico to the late Felipe Hernandez and Laura Mora Hernandez. Beloved wife of 54 years to the late Pedro Concepcion Rivera. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Ramona (Ramonita), Justa, Altagracia (Tita) Ines, Ines Altagracia Hernandez-Mora; and her brothers, Justo and Arcadio Hernandez-Mora. A native of Puerto Rico, she moved to New Orleans in 1962 and became a long-time resident of Marrero.
Laura is survived by her brother, Ramon Hernandez-Mora; her children, Edward (Anne-Gwin), Paul (Michele), Vilma Lally (Ron), Giselle Isbell (Ted); her grandchildren, Michael Rivera, Alexis Rivera, Amanda Lally, Ethan Van Sant, Nathaniel Isbell, Marissa Lally, Julia Rivera, Sofia Rivera, Dylan Isbell and Colin Rivera; her in-laws, Harold and Iraida (Yayi) Lamy, Ada Rivera Major (Bob); her beloved dog “Cody”; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Laura attended the University of Puerto Rico where she received a BS in Chemistry and a Masters in Mathematics. For over twenty-five years she proudly worked at Tulane Medical Center's Med-Rep Program. For many years, Laura was a member of the Marians of New Orleans, the Club de Puerto Rico, and the Sunflowers Social Club.
Laura was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, mother-in-law, and friend. Quiet, unassuming, stubborn, funny, loyal and strong, she was the “angel” of our eyes. She was an avid cook, especially known for her arroz con gandules and other native dishes. She loved spending time with her family on vacations and cruises, making many memorable trips to Pensacola, Percy Quinn, Boise, Las Vegas, Disney World and Puerto Rico. Her weekly outings with her women’s group, the “Sunflowers”, brought days of friendship, fun, and joy. She also enjoyed playing bingo, going to the movies, or a Mardi Gras parade.
The family wishes to thank Leslie, her personal caregiver for several months, as well as the staff at Wynhoven Nursing Home for the care they provided during her time with them.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd., New Orleans, on Monday, February 19, 2018, starting at 11:00 AM, followed by a Mass in the Chapel at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow in Greenwood Mausoleum.
