Anthony (Tony) Maniscalco passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, October 25, 2017. He was 78. Tony was born in New Orleans on February 20, 1939, the son of the late Simon Joseph Maniscalco and Jennie Russo. A loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Gwen Hardouin Maniscalco, and their three beautiful daughters: Lisa Ann Happoldt (Dan), Leslie Ann Baudry (Rich) and Laurell Ann Szczepanski (Jeffrey). He was affectionately known as “Tee” to his eight adoring grandchildren: Alexander Happoldt, Isabella Baudry, Sophia Happoldt, Elliott Baudry, Abigail Szczepanski, Ava Szczepanski, Emery Baudry, and Adam Szczepanski. Brother of Dorothy Buisson (late John), Joann Boudreaux (L.A.), Simon (Sammy) Maniscalco (Beth), and the late John (Johnny) Maniscalco. Brother-in-law of Janis and John Gordon, and Edward Hardouin. He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Tony was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie. Tony graduated from East Jefferson High School in 1958 where he was a standout athlete in three sports. “The East Jeff Ace”, Tony was a three year letterman in basketball, and football. He was voted “Mr. Vitality” by his peers and affectionately referred to himself as “Dr. Net”! Tony was named All-Metro first team in football, basketball and baseball by the Times Picayune. Tony also coached for many years at Jefferson Playground.
He served honorably in the United States Army from 1960-1963. Tony began his professional career with Rheem Manufacturing, moved on to McDonald Sales, and retired from his own company, McDonald Flooring, in 2008. Tony, a natural salesman, earned many sales honors and awards during his career.
Tony was a long time active member of Bissonet Manned Downs Country Club, serving as a Board Member, President and social chairman; a Member of the Italian American Marching Club; the Mt. Carmel Dad’s Club; an LSU Delta Gamma Anchor Dad; and a charter member of the Krewe of Orpheus. Tony was also one of the founding members of the “Familia”, a five-family Thanksgiving tradition who has celebrated together for over 40 years.
Tony lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Tony never missed a wedding, party, game, dance recital, swim meet, or musical. Tony especially loved the beach - “his happy place” - and fishing. He loved to travel and take photographs of landscape, flowers, and food. He leaves a legacy of great times, true friendships, and grand love.
Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral mass at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Boulevard; New Orleans, LA 70124 on Monday, October 30, 2017 at 1:30pm.
